World Heavyweight Champion

The very worst Heavyweight champions in the division’s long history brought little glory to the championship. Desultory performances were the rule rather than the exception and they rarely stirred the blood of the fans. Most of the poorest titleholders gave up their belt in their very first defence. Poor records abound among the claimants to this unwanted prize and their dull and uninspiring styles often left the fans feeling shortchanged. Historically the division has endured many peaks and troughs. Most of the men on this list were very lucky to come along during periods when even they stood out amidst the slurry of uninspiring journeymen. The list takes a chronological look at the fighters whose careers remain a forgettable footnote in the division’s history.

Jack Sharkey

The Boston Gob was lucky his career sandwiched those of Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis. Jack was a journeyman champion in every sense of the world. He won his title on a very questionable split decision over Max Schmeling and lost it to the lumbering Carnera in his very first defence, by knockout in six rounds. Sharkey would never gain another title shot. His record is one of the poorest ever sported by a Heavyweight title claimant, standing at 38-14-3 with only 13 knockouts.

James J Braddock

Russell Crowe’s acting has put James Braddock on the map and posthumously elevated his status in the boxing world. However, artistic license aside Braddock was a poor champion. His record shows twenty-three losses, more than almost any other Heavyweight champion. He is the archetypal journeyman who got lucky. His title victory over a lethargic Max Baer was the highlight of his career and a result he never cam close to repeating.
